California Dragon Boat Association

Voted last year's best booth, the California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA) will again offer mini lessons on a simulated dragon boat at this year's Asian Heritage Street Celebration. By utilizing an “erg,” a device used to train rowers, the adventurous can climb aboard and discover what it is like to be a paddler on a dragon boat.

Today's dragon boat races are derived from annual commemorations of that event and continue to mix culture with athletic competition. Before the festival, Daoist monks bless boats and then in what is known as the “awakening of the dragon ceremony,” the eyes of the dragons at the head of the boats are dotted by community leaders. With blessings offered, the races begin manned by teams of all creeds and ages.

“What is unique,” says Linda Cheu, CDBA President, “is that it is part cultural, part social, and increasingly becoming a highly competitive athletic sport.” Nevertheless, she is quick to point out that it is “very accessible to all people, being the ultimate team sport.” The largest competitive dragon boat festival in the United States, the Kaiser Permanente International Dragon Boat Festival, is set to begin, September 23 through to the 24 and will be held on Treasure Island with 100 teams competing in what promises to be a day of spirit and muscle, festivity and excitement. For more information about CDBA visit www.cdba.org.

Congratulations to the CALIFORNIA DRAGON BOAT ASSOCIATION for winning last year!

DJ Jenicide

Since 1997, DJ Jenicide has been captivating audiences with an exquisite blend of reggae riddims, sexy dubs, hip-hop nostalgia, classic soul, rock-steady breaks, raw funk, jazzy grooves, and experimental beats, creating the wicked hybrid all-female earth-signed moon-powered crew of two illin-illocanas known as A Lady's Touch. Hailing straight out of San Jose, the duo has rocked crowds together and individually from the bay area, all the way out to the Midwest while still maintaining an organic appeal and resisting all forms of mainstream commercialism.

Affiliated with collectives such as the 5th Element, Sisterz of the Underground, Funk Lab Productions, Jah Warrior Shelter, and the Zulu Nation, Jenicide not only can rock a party, but has also been known for flexing their turntable trickery and creating abstract musical landscapes, selecting the freshest breaks for the b-kids to battle, and even simply providing audio ambiance for random art shows, in-store appearances, and private cannabis club engagements. Their diverse sets have landed them gigs for a vast array of events and venues such as Pride 2003, Carnival, the Great American Music Hall, Oberlin and Stanford college just to name a few. They've performed with and opened for some of the most talented artists today including MC Lyte, Mystic, Goapele, Medusa, Eyedea from Rhymesayers, Triple Threat, the Anomolies, Pam the Funkstress, Crazy Legs, Rocafella, and Asia One.
