Community Highlight: Public Allies

Public Allies San Francisco and Silicon Valley are excited to participate once again in this year’s Asian Heritage Street Celebration. Public Allies is a 10-month professional development AmeriCorps program that is focused on cultivating the next generation of social justice leaders. Allies are given positions in nonprofit and community based organizations four days out of the week. On Fridays they receive education and training related to issues ranging from procuring donations to addressing race, class and gender disparities.  In addition, they are placed into service project teams that collaborate to increase the impact and capacity of Bay Area organizations such as AsianWeek. Their participation in the Asian Heritage Street Celebration is one of the projects they are most excited to be a part of.

Similar to last year, the Allies will be focusing on making the street celebration fun for both children and their families. The Allies will be hosting kids activities, such as planting mint seeds, playing games unique to API culture, sharing their dreams with a wishing tree and reading API folklore that can even be taken home.  They will also be taking things to a deeper level, by asking festivalgoers what the term Asian Pacific Islander means to them, and offering a space for local API youth to express themselves through performances. Lastly, outside of the children’s area, a few Allies will be educating festival attendees on Asian American workers’ rights.
As you can see, there is so much to look forward to this year and Public Allies hopes you will be a part of it!
