Fast and Furious Cars From Wekfest
By Annie Chan
During our daily gridlock, seldom do we check out other cars, let alone other drivers, but now there’s a new crew of rides emerging, cutting lanes and pushing through the standstill. They’re the cars from Wekfest.
At the 7th Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration taking place on May 21 at San Francisco’s Civic Center, visitors can expect to see quality modern J-cars and high-end European sports cars, like the Amuse Skyline R35 GT-R, Mach III G35, Full Function 800HP and 650HP Evolutions. The man behind the scenes is car show veteran Ernesto Junior. His latest annual Fort Mason show featured more than 600 cars from Texas to Canada and attracted over 15,000 visitors.
Wekfest has normally been a Bay Area show, but recently they’ve partnered up with Fatlace and Weksos Industries to take their souped-up rides on tour across the nation, hitting up four top U.S. spots: LA, Chicago, Dallas and Hawaii. Next year, they plan to take their tours to a new level, adding Tokyo and the United Kingdom to their next tour stops.
The Stanford alumnus understands the value of authenticity. Ernesto attributes his popularity and success to his beliefs: “keep it simple” and “stick to the cars.” Unlike other car shows with flashy hip-hop stars and motorcycle stunt shows, his shows have no fancy lighting, outrageous fees, or loud performances. For him, the real attraction is the cars.
In the J-cars area of the street celebration, you may hear terms like Drift Style, VIP BIPPU Style, or Track/Race but don’t let the jargon intimidate you. Come meet some car enthusiasts, and learn about automotive technology, performance and design. Perhaps soon you’ll be living the fast and the furious lifestyle.
