We began life as four very different hospitals more than 150 years ago, serving different communities. Our partnerships with the API community began in an unlikely fashion in the 1880s when Charlotte Blake Brown MD, one of the first female physicians in San Francisco, founded the first hospital on the West Coast run by women, for women. It quickly became popular with Chinese women who traditionally were more comfortable being under the care of a female practitioner. In the 1880s, Dr. Brown opened up a clinic in Chinatown, to be better able to serve the women and children of the community. Today, Dr. Brown’s hospital (our California campus) is part of an integrated, citywide network of care that serves and provides culturally competent care for all communities and neighborhoods in San Francisco.

Through CPMC’s long standing community health partnerships, which include Chinese Hospital, North East Medical Services, Wu Yee Children’s Services, API Wellness Center, APA Family Support Services, and the Hep B Free Campaign, CPMC offers its clinical resources to address the community’s pressing health disparities of childhood obesity, senior health, labor and delivery, and communicable diseases. We provide programmatic, clinical, and specialty support, health education initiatives, screenings, financial support to established programs and institutions, and are an active partner in Healthy San Francisco.

With one in 10 Asians affected by hepatitis B in San Francisco, it is the leading cause of liver cancer in this community. The CPMC team joined the citywide partners in designing and implementing the San Francisco Hep B Free Campaign. We have developed a mobile program that brings community education and free, confidential testing to city locations, workplaces and events with high-density API populations. We are committed to ending this disease by offering free testing for 10,000 people for the virus. To that end, we are again providing free hepatitis B screenings at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration. We encourage you to get tested and to encourage your family and friends to do the same!

As we honor our past, we are also planning for the future. We are planning to build two brand new, earthquake-safe hospitals: one at our St. Luke’s Campus and another at the corner of Van Ness and Geary. These hospitals will meet the changing needs of our city and our communities. Technology and medicines change with time, but one thing that does not is our commitment to being here to provide you with hands-on care when you need us. For more information about CPMC and our future plans, visit www.rebuildcpmc.org.

By Jason Liu

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C advocates joined together in front of City Hall on Oct. 17, 2011. Photo by Angela Pang.

Declaration of the National Viral Hepatitis Testing Day came at the heels of the first national plan devised by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to address the prevention, care and treatment of viral hepatitis. The first National Viral Hepatitis Testing Day happens to coincide with the Asian Heritage Street Celebration, where visitors can get free Hepatitis B and C screenings.

National Viral Hepatitis Testing Day is meant to highlight the six key components of a grand plan. As mentioned at last year’s Hep B Free Gala in San Francisco, the plan is to combat a silent epidemic by 1) increasing knowledge and awareness about chronic viral hepatitis among providers, patients, and at-risk communities, 2) improve testing, care, and treatment to prevent liver disease and cancer which could affect over 25% of those chronically infected, 3) strengthening surveillance, 4) stepping up vaccination efforts to eliminate transmission of vaccine-preventable hepatitis, especially during birth, 5) reducing drug-use-related transmission and 6)protect patients and workers from healthcare-associated transmission.

But why would we need a day dedicated to hepatitis testing. Why is it so important? Because the reality is that the disease is here for the long haul, and because the ever-present stigma towards the disease is reinforcing our reluctance to see a physician or drop by a free clinic to have our blood tested. Because we need to have the rhetorical alarm clock that chimes once a year to remind us of a problem we haven’t yet solved, and a day we all rally to recognize what remains to be accomplished. Even as we speak, in President Obama’s recent Global Health Initiative proposal, viral hepatitis remains to be included despite its global prevalence, proven methods to prevent the disease, and lethal consequences for chronically infected patients who lack access to treatment.

So this is the day, on the eighth annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration, to set aside any prejudice towards anyone that is infected and to respect that the disease is often inherited through birth. Today is the day to see a physician or to drop by the mobile clinics which certain Bay Area hospitals have established for your well-being. It’s the day to tell your friends and family – to be vocal about these efforts to end a disease that could be prevented. Shout, because even though the disease received recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, even the President’s office needs the occasional reminder to include viral hepatitis in a global health plan. Otherwise, it will continue to be a shame that people die of a disease that could be prevented.

The name itself, National Viral Hepatitis Testing Day, very directly states the first step towards eradicating this lingering community health problem. And ultimately, I look forward to the day it serves its purpose, and it could be replaced with a day where viral hepatitis is not remembered for its impact on patients and families in the global community, but as just a routine vaccination.

Jason Liu is the interim project coordinator of the San Francisco Hep B Free Campaign.

Since 2001, Comcast has provided $2.2 billion in cash and in-kind support to national and local non-profit organizations across the country. Comcast works with non-profits to create successful programs that improve the quality of life, focusing on digital literacy, education, youth leadership, and volunteers. Comcast is a national partner of the Asian American Justice Center and has consistently supported key API efforts like the Asian Heritage Street Festival and the Hep B Free campaign. Last year, Comcast executed a landmark agreement with the Asian Pacific Islander community that will pave new ground for APIs in media and communication. The agreement includes: expanding the distribution of Asian American owned, operated and targeted programming, launching a new API focused video-on-demand offering as part of its standard digital package available to 18 million subscribers, and dedication of a $1 million to build a bigger pipeline for Asian American-themed programming. So far, Comcast has established a groundbreaking senior-level member of its external affairs and the public policy staff to serve as a community liaison. In addition, Comcast has appointed nine members to its new Asian American Advisory Council.

If you see a monk at this year’s Asian Heritage Street Celebration, just say “hello.” With the intention of infusing fairgoers and followers with Tam Boon, or merit-making, monks from Thai temple Wat Buddhapradeep in San Bruno will perform a 30-minute blessing to kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. on the main stage. An age-old Buddhist tradition, “merit” is about practicing good deeds today for an even more pure tomorrow (a.k.a. “karma). For anyone who isn’t familiar with this oldest surviving school of Buddhism known as Theravada, literally “the Teaching of the Elders” or “the ancient teachings,” monks will be on hand throughout the day for anyone who wants more knowledge about this particular school.

For festival visitors, Wat Buddhapradeep offers the following primer when trying to build a conversation with monks:

Monks can be addressed by their first name.

The head is considered the most sacred part of the body, and it is unacceptable to touch a monk on the head.

The feet are the least sacred part of the body, so when sitting on the floor, the feet should not point at or poke a monk. Rather, sit with feet tucked under one’s body.

Alcohol should not be given to monks.

With the exception of medical treatments or life-saving acts, monks are forbidden to touch a woman. Restrictions do not apply to men.

The left hand is considered unclean and should not be used to eat, receive gifts or shake hands.

In Thai Buddhism, women cannot be ordained as monks. However, laywomen can choose to practice and follow strict practices of the teachings in order to achieve Nirvana, or enlightenment. They can reside wherever they choose and practice within their own jurisdiction. Although not mandatory, these women can be identified by their all-white clothing.
