Muay Thai Kickboxing
Attendees of this year’s Asian Heritage Street Celebration are in for a treat, because for the first time ever, the fair will feature a Muay Thai Kickboxing Ring, in which 20-40 live fights will take place. Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai) army. The event is free and will begin at 1pm.

Free Hep B Screenings
Yul Kwon, winner of CBS’s Survivor: Cook Islands (and new CNN correspondent) along with the Cho Brothers of CBS’s Amazing Race 10 will be screened for hepatitis B during the Asian Heritage Street Celebration (AHSC) in San Francisco’s SOMA district at 1025 Howard Street on Saturday, May 19th, 2007. The Asian Liver Center at Stanford University will provide free hepatitis B screenings and vaccinations will be available at $20 per shot while supplies last.
J-cars
They’re back and they’re better than ever! After taking a hiatus from last year’s Asian Heritage Street Celebration due to lack of space, J-cars will once again be on display at this year’s 3rd Annual AHSC on May 19 in San Francisco’s SOMA district.
Sponsored by jdmtheory, which stands for Japanese Domestic Market, about 50 Japanese cars will be displayed on Howard Street, including models like the Infiniti G35, the Nissan 240SX and 350Z, the Honda S2000, as well as Honda Civics and Acura Integras.
Karaoke
For those who did not make the cut for American Idol and always dreamed of singing in front of a live audience, now is the chance to show your stuff at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration karaoke stage! This second annual contest will take place from 1p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Contestants will perform one song of their choice and in order to participate, they must sign up before noon on May 19 at the Natoma Stage. The grand prize is a pair of round trip airline tickets anywhere in the U.S. courtesy of Southwest Airlines. Other prizes include cash and restaurant gift certificates donated by Chinatown restaurants: Cathay House, Thai Chef and Far East Cafe, plus gift baskets from Sugar Bowl bakery.
Flores de Mayo “Faces of Asia” Procession
For the first time ever, the Asian Heritage Street Celebration will have the Faces of Asia: Flores de Mayo Procession. Participants will be dressed in costumes and cultural attire and will walk around the street fair on May 19.
Flores de Mayo is a Catholic festival held in the Philippines in the month of May. It lasts for a month, and is held in honor of the Virgin Mary. The procession aims to incorporate and feature intergenerational, multi-ethnic and various Asian cultural expressions of flowers and beauty and is being organized by the Bayanihan Community Center/Filipino-American Development Foundation. The Flores de Mayo is tentatively scheduled to take place at noon.
